Talking indoor training with UCI Professional team, Drops Cycling
With the reality of the COVID-19 crisis making training outside difficult and racing impossible, we caught up with riders from the DROPS Cycling Team to learn how they have adapted and sought to innovate during this unique time as a professional athlete.
No doubt you have been spending plenty of time on the indoor trainer these days, what sort of riding do you enjoy most and are there any particular sessions you look forward to more than others?
Marjolein Van’t Geloof: “If I ride on the turbo I prefer doing efforts, because it makes the time go faster. I really like to do some over/under intervals when you switch between Zone 3 and Zone 4 efforts with no rest in between. So you can change after 1 minute, 2 minutes or even 5 minutes. That way you can stretch your Zone 3 and 4 capacities.”
Finja Smekal: “Actually I have no favourite session on the turbo, but I think that the races on Zwift are very efficient in a short time.”
April Tacey: “Any session really, I like to do my more specific efforts on the turbo as there isn’t any traffic lights or obstructions in the way of my effort. The short and sharp ones I’d say I like doing best on the turbo, but they are hard work!”
Sara Penton: “Oh, I’m really not the turbo person but IF I have to sit indoors I prefer short and hard intervals, no longer than 4 or 5 minutes. That makes the time go faster and I can keep my focus well.”
Emilie Moberg: “I think 40/20 efforts. It’s easy to control the intensity when you ride on the turbo and it’s a really good way to get a good volume of high power and heart rate. And it feels a bit like riding an echelon, which I like.”
Good to know that it is not just enthusiasts who struggle with life on the turbo trainer at the moment! What are your top tricks for staying entertained on long turbo sessions indoors?
MvG: “On the turbo I usually put music on. Also I set a goal for myself. So it can be efforts that I have to do or a climb I have to finish on Zwift. This really helps, but when I reach my goal I am done really quick.”
FS: “When I do a ride on a turbo I always listen to music. Mostly some Rap or Electronic for keeping entertained. When I just do an easy ride I sometimes watch a movie.”
AT: “I usually listen to music and focus on getting my efforts done and the time usually flies by.”
SP: “If I could have someone riding on a turbo next to me that’s always nice, otherwise good music or something to watch, like an easy movie, if the session is easier and longer.”
EM: “Watch a bike race, for example an exciting stage of Tour de France or Women’s Tour. You will get the adrenaline from watching other riders suffering!”
Many of those who have made the switch to indoor training recently are discovering how crucial nutrition is even when on the turbo. What is your favourite ONE PRO Nutrition product when training indoors?
MvG: “I really love the Pineapple & Coconut Hydro Energy Drink Mix. You really drink more on the bike when you have a yummy cocktail in your bottle.”
FS: “My favourite product from ONE PRO Nutrition during training is the Pineapple & Coconut Hydro Energy Drink Mix. After training I like to eat the Raspberry & Chocolate Protein Bar.”
AT: “I’m a fan of the Raspberry & Chocolate Protein Bar. I like the flavour of it and it’s also low in sugar which is great.”
SP: “I like the drink mixes, especially on harder sessions. It makes it easier to get the fuel in while pushing the legs.”
Next week we catch up with the team to discuss their return to riding back on the open roads, training off the bike and their nutrition plans which are keeping them ready to race as soon as possible.
